To many people climate change is a subject too difficult or too stressful to think about. Bakewell Climate Action are a group working hard to change that. Accepting that climate change affects everyone we are working together to help our community develop renewable energy, restore nature, improve cycling routes, improve bus services, grow more local organic food, and help those in fuel poverty. We are a non-profit, non-political organization run by hard working volunteers.
We are working on a number of projects such as: putting solar panels on schools, churches, factories, car parks and homes. Research is underway to create a new cycle way along the Derwent, opening up active travel between towns, parks, stately homes and villages along the way.
There is work going on at the golf club to try to make it truly green by changing out the fossil fuelled boiler, also looking into the possibility of using a large solar array to keep the lights on when the future national grid is inadequate. If this comes about, it could be an example of how to use community generated energy. There are also possibilities to produce electricity using hydro power along the river.
We started the group trying to find a site for a community orchard which could become a teaching tool for children planting and picking and helping care for our environment. We have now been invited to pick apples from a private orchard and share the produce. There is also the possibility of helping children plant native trees on the hillside where Ash trees have been felled.
We have also developed ways to help those in fuel poverty get help to insulate their homes. High, and rising, energy costs are killing people, potentially closing village schools and businesses thus robbing people of their jobs. There are many climate groups in towns and villages in Derbyshire who share their expertise and encouragement. We all want to see this beautiful world preserved for our children and grandchildren and their grandchildren. This is where the Industrial Revolution started that caused climate change. It is now time to be part of the solution. Why don’t you join us in our endeavours?
